What Tarot Cards Are and Their History

Tarot cards form a deck of 78 cards, each with unique images, symbols, and meanings. The deck divides into two main sections: the Major Arcana (22 cards) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards). The Major Arcana cards represent significant life themes and spiritual lessons, while the Minor Arcana cards deal with everyday situations and influences.

Tarot cards originated in 15th-century Italy, initially used as playing cards in games similar to bridge. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, European occultists began assigning symbolic meanings to the cards. The modern tarot tradition developed significantly during the 19th century when French esotericists like Antoine Court de Gébelin and later Arthur Edward Waite created structured systems of interpretation. The Rider-Waite deck, published in 1909, became one of the most widely recognized tarot decks and remains popular today with millions of copies sold worldwide.

Different cultures and time periods have developed their own tarot traditions. The Marseille tarot represents a French tradition with simpler imagery, while modern decks incorporate themes from various cultures, mythology, and artistic styles. Some tarot decks focus on nature imagery, others on mythology, and still others on contemporary spirituality. Understanding tarot's historical development helps readers appreciate why certain symbols appear consistently across different decks.

Tarot reading has been documented in writings across centuries. Court records from the 1600s mention fortune tellers using cards. By the 1800s, tarot reading became increasingly popular in Europe and North America. Today, millions of people worldwide explore tarot as a tool for reflection and self-discovery, with tarot book sales and deck publications increasing significantly since the year 2000.

Practical Takeaway: Before beginning tarot study, obtain a deck that resonates with you visually. Take time to examine each card's artwork and the guidebook provided with your deck. Understanding the cards' historical context can deepen your appreciation for their symbolism and meaning.

The Structure of a Tarot Deck

The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards numbered 0 through 21. These cards represent archetypal energies and major life transitions. The Fool (0) begins the journey, followed by The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, and continuing through The World (21), which completes the cycle. Each Major Arcana card tells a story of spiritual development and transformation. When Major Arcana cards appear in readings, they typically indicate significant themes or turning points in a person's situation.

The Minor Arcana divides into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Each suit contains 14 cards (numbered Ace through 10, plus four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King). Wands traditionally represent creativity, passion, and action. Cups relate to emotions, relationships, and intuition. Swords connect to intellect, communication, and conflict. Pentacles deal with material matters, work, health, and physical resources. Understanding these suit meanings provides a foundation for interpreting individual cards.

The court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King) in each suit represent different ages, genders, or personality types, though modern readers often interpret them more flexibly. The Page typically represents youth or new energy. The Knight embodies action and movement. The Queen represents maturity and receptivity. The King symbolizes mastery and leadership. In readings, court cards can represent actual people in the reader's life or qualities the person should develop.

Numbered cards in the Minor Arcana (Ace through 10) show progression and development within each suit's theme. The Ace represents potential and new beginnings, while the 10 shows completion or culmination. The cards in between trace a journey through various stages. For example, in the Cups suit, the progression moves from the Ace of Cups (new emotional beginning) through emotional development to the 10 of Cups (emotional fulfillment). Learning this structure creates a logical framework for interpretation.

Practical Takeaway: Create flashcards or a reference guide listing each suit and its basic meaning. Practice matching each of the 78 cards to its suit, number, and general significance. Spend several days simply reviewing the deck structure before attempting actual readings.

Learning Card Meanings and Symbolism

Each tarot card carries multiple layers of meaning. The upright position (card appearing right-side up) generally represents the card's positive or straightforward meaning, while the reversed position (card appearing upside down) often indicates challenges, blocked energy, or opposite meanings. For example, The Sun upright represents joy and success, while The Sun reversed may suggest obstacles to happiness or delayed positive outcomes. Beginning readers should learn both upright and reversed meanings to develop fuller interpretations.

Card symbolism draws from multiple traditions including astrology, numerology, alchemy, and mythology. The Magician card typically features symbols of the four elements (earth, air, fire, water) representing resourcefulness and manifestation. The High Priestess includes lunar imagery symbolizing intuition and hidden knowledge. The Wheel of Fortune incorporates astrological symbols showing cyclical change. Learning to recognize these symbols across different decks deepens understanding. Most tarot guidebooks explain the symbolism within each card's artwork.

A practical approach to learning card meanings involves studying one card per day. Read the guidebook's description, examine the artwork carefully, note the symbols and colors, and write down three to five key meanings in your own words. Consider how the card's imagery relates to its interpretation. After studying all 78 cards this way (taking about 2.5 months), review them in smaller groups. Create associations between cards with similar themes. For instance, The Three of Cups, The Lovers, and The Ten of Cups all relate to relationship and connection, though each expresses this differently.

Researchers at institutions studying tarot note that card meaning systems vary considerably between different tarot traditions. The guidebook accompanying your specific deck provides the most reliable reference for that deck's interpretation system. Different readers may interpret the same card differently based on their training and approach. This variation is normal and expected in tarot practice. Written resources, including tarot books and online guides, offer supplementary perspectives on traditional card meanings.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a tarot journal where you record each card's meaning in your own words along with symbols you notice. Include personal associations that help you remember the card. Over time, this journal becomes your personalized reference guide and tracks your learning progress.

Basic Tarot Spreads and Reading Layouts

A tarot spread refers to a specific pattern in which cards are laid out during a reading. Spreads range from simple one or two-card readings to complex layouts using many cards. The simplest spread is the one-card draw, where a single card answers a specific question or provides guidance for the day. A three-card spread uses three cards in a row, commonly interpreted as past-present-future, situation-action-outcome, or mind-body-spirit. These basic spreads teach fundamental reading skills and work well for practicing interpretation.

The Celtic Cross spread remains one of the most popular and traditional layouts, using ten cards arranged in a specific pattern. Position one (center) represents the situation or person being read for. Position two (crossing) shows obstacles or influences. Positions three and four (above and below) represent conscious awareness and unconscious factors. Positions five and six (left and right) show past influences and near future. Positions seven through ten form a vertical line showing self-view, others' perspectives, hopes and fears, and final outcome. Learning the Celtic Cross takes practice but provides detailed information.

The horseshoe spread uses seven cards in a curved pattern, traditionally interpreted as distant past, recent past, present, near future, distant future, outside influences, and final outcome. This spread works well for understanding situations developing over time. The relationship spread uses five or six cards specifically examining romantic or close relationships, with positions addressing each person's perspective, the relationship dynamic, challenges, and potential. Different spreads serve different purposes, and selecting the right spread depends on the question being explored.

Beginners should start with three-card and one-card spreads before advancing to more complex layouts. Research into tarot reading practices shows that consistent use of the same spreads helps readers develop familiarity and skill. Many professional tarot readers report using the same five to ten spreads repeatedly rather than constantly learning new ones. Once comfortable with basic spreads, readers can create custom spreads tail
